Buying the right shoes is very important for your feet’s overall health. Shoes are not mainly for fashion but they should protect, provide balance, and keep your feet healthy.
Have you bought a new pair of shoes that ended up collecting dust at home because they hurt or do not offer support at all? Make no mistake any longer in buying your next one!
Follow these 5 steps in choosing what shoes to buy to ensure your feet get the protection and comfort they need.
Want to see how much support your shoes provide? Push the back ends of your shoes inwards. If the back end stays firm, the heel counter is robust and will provide significant support to your feet. If the back end bends inwards, the heel counter is flexible. This means you either have a lightweight training shoe meant for activities that don’t require support.
Bend the part of the shoe where your toes will go. Your foot naturally bends and flexes at your metatarsal joints, located just behind your toes. Having a shoe that bends with your feet is important not only for comfort but also for facilitating training routines. The more flexible and elastic your shoe is where the metatarsal joints bend, the greater your ability to activate and utilise the muscles in your foot.
Ensure the middle section of your shoe does not twist. You should not be able to twist your shoes through the middle; instead, it should remain stable and firm. This is essential for supporting your foot arch and bearing the weight of your body when you walk or run.
Tying laces can help! If you don’t want to use laces, then buckles or velcro can achieve the same result. Securing your feet helps to keep your toes from jamming into the front end of your shoes – and it increases support, which can help relieve pain in your feet.
Want to ensure your shoes fit correctly? Look no further than your thumb! You should leave about one thumb-width (1.5 cm) of space between the tip of your longest toe and the front end of the shoe you are fitting for. This is because as you move, your foot slides forward. If your toes are touching the front end of your shoes, then they are too small! Remember – your longest toe may not necessarily be your big toe!
Have you on the other hand have been having foot pain due to a wrong shoe choices in the past? Its not yet too late to correct this.

Buying your new pair of shoes soon?
Remember these when purchasing a new pair of shoes:
- Measure your feet standing.
Your feet expands when standing, so it is best to measure the size when standing.
- Try on both shoes.
Trying it on just one foot is not enough, its is best to try both and walk around the store with them.
- You should be comfortable on first try.
We grew up always hearing this from our grown ups, “new shoes hurts, it’ll expand soon”. Shse that is not comfortable at first try is a hard pass! Most shoes does not and will not expand.
- Do not rely on the shoe size of your last shoes.
Always try the shoes, avoid purchasing online if possible. Size 10 for a running shoes might fit you well previously, but a closed leather shoes may require you a bigger size, or a smaller size for a sandals. Rule of thumb, never compromise your comfort.
- Avoid morning shoe shopping.
Feet do swell towards the end of the day, so it is best to purchase your shoes late afternoon.
- Bring the socks or stockings you always wear.
Always wear your desired stockings or socks when trying out a new pair, to make sure you get the best fit.
- Bring your Doctor’s prescribed Custom Foot orthotics.
If you have prescription orthotics, always bring them when trying your a new pair of shoes.
